Airdrie travel to Ross County on Saturday for what might not be a must-win game, but is certainly not a must lose one.

When the Diamonds lost 1-0 to the league leaders at New Broomfield in October, it looked as though any thoughts of winning the league had evaporated, but a good run of recent form has seen Airdrie get to within three points of County - although the Highlanders do have a game in hand.

It’s fair to say this is a massive week in Airdrie’s season (and future?). Victory over County on Saturday, coupled with a win over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup on Saturday would see the Diamonds possibly top of the Second Division and with a money-spinning Scottish Cup tie against Celtic to look forward to.

On the flip side, defeat in both matches could leave Airdrie a massive nine points behind County (assuming they win their game in hand) and out of the Scottish Cup, with no potential source of income to claw back the seasons losses.

With that in mind, we can only hope the bad weather has not disrupted the momentum of a side who are finally showing signs of starting to gel.

Saturday’s game might come too soon for Graeme Holmes although there may be a chance of him being involved against Killie in midweek. Stuart Noble and Ricky Waddell, who both returned to the bench against Peterhead will be pushing for a start.

I’d suggest the team would go something like this:

Robertson; Smyth, Donnelly, McKenna, Lovering; Smith, McDonald, Andreoni, McDougall; Russell, Noble.

That would mean just one change from the Peterhead game, with Noble coming in for the out of sorts Bryan Prunty. Lovering will probably be favoured ahead of Waddell due to his experience for the big match.

Prediction:  Ross County 1 - 1 Airdrie
