Alloa Athletic v Airdrie United Match Preview
Airdrie United head to Recreation Park on Saturday in a must-win Irn Bru Second Division league encounter, hoping their good form over the Wasps continues. Airdrie turned in their best performance of the season away to Alloa in September with a crushing 6-0 victory in a game that was played almost exclusively in the Alloa half.
Airdrie were also victorious in the return fixture at New Broomfield, winning 2-0. Despite the ease of both victories however, Alloa sit only four behind the Diamonds in the league. With last weeks heartbreaking defeat to Ross County leaving Airdrie potentially nine points behind the leaders, they can afford no further slip ups on Saturday.
It’s fair to say the Airdrie squad is very stretched, with Steven McDougall being ruled out for a month - a major blow to a squad already stretched to the bare bones. With Kilmarnock to come on Monday, it’s a huge few days for Airdrie which will test the squad to the limits.
Top scorer Allan Russell should be fit after limping off against Ross County last week, with Darren Smith likely to fill the role vacated by McDougall.
Airdrie will be hoping Kevin McDonald can keep up his recent run of good goalscoring form.
Likely team:
Robertson; Smyth, Donnelly, McKenna, Lovering; Smith, McDonald, Andreoni, Waddell; Russell, Noble.
Prediction:
Alloa Athletic 1 - 2 Airdrie United
