Airdrie United 2 - 0 Ross County

Airdrie United turned in a much improved performance on Wednesday to defeat league champions Ross County by 2-0 and secure a place in the 2007-08 Second Division Play-Off finals. Although the match was rendered meaningless after last Saturday’s 2-1 reverse at Brechin handed Ross County the title, there is still a lot to play for as we seek to enter the playoffs with momentum.

Credit must go to the club for reducing the entry fee for kids to just £2 for this fixture - a gesture which will be repeated for our remaining two home league games.

A crowd of 724 saw Airdrie clap Ross County onto the park, before making a disappointing start against a team with little to play for having being crowned champions on Saturday. However, gradually Airdrie came more and more into the game with a fit-again and Graeme Holmes and an improved Marco Andreoni both taking turns to get forward and creating scoring chances. Andreoni was unlucky not to score after a nice move ended with his shot well saved by Tony Bullock.

The first goal came after some quick thinking from Holmes from a freekick setup Allan Russell - who was dangerous throughout and his cutback was miscued by Bryan Prunty into the path of Stuart Noble who had a simple tap in. Steven Robertson had a couple of good stops before the second goal midway through the first half, Russell bundling the ball home after Prunty’s shot was stopped.

Overall this was a much more encouraging performance from Airdrie - with Kevin McDonald and Steven McKenna both missing - and does give us hopes for the playoffs which will be so crucial for the clubs future. Chairman Jim Ballantyne has this week admitted part-time football is likely if the club don’t go up, so we’ll need more performances like this to avoid that!
