Queens Park vs Airdrie United Match Preview

Airdrie United head to the national stadium on Saturday to take on Queen’s Park. Wednesday night’s disappointing draw with 10 man Ayr United may have ended Airdrie’s title hopes, but that does not make Saturday’s fixture meaningless.

It’s fair to say the league is Ross County’s as if they win their game in hand, they are 14 points clear. There is nothing we can do to stop them, even winning all of our remaining fixtures is unlikely to be enough and fair play to Ross County - they have been the best team in the league this season and deserve to win the title.

Wednesday’s game just emphasises why we are having to settle for second best. 1-0 up at half time against 10 men, especially against a team with an awful home record and who have taken a lot of heavy beatings, we really should be able to kill that game off quite easily. Instead, we’re left hanging on and were perhaps fortunate to escape with a point in the end.

That doesn’t make tomorrow’s game or the rest of the season meaningless. We have not been good enough this season. That is a fact. If you state at the start of the season you expect to win the league and you’re out of the title race in February, you’ve failed. There can be no excuses.

Now though, we must focus our efforts first and foremost on getting a place in the play-offs (we should be ok, but we can’t be complacement) and then on winning the play-offs. I can’t think of a better way to get promoted than in winning at somewhere like Cappielow, but there’s a lot of hard work to be done first.

Rather than mump and moan we need everyone to get behind the team, starting tomorrow.
