Holmes out for four weeks
Airdrie United have been dealt a huge blow with the news that midfielder Graeme Holmes will be out for up to four weeks after suffering a fresh injury setback. The former Dundee Utd midfielder has already missed large parts of the season and had only just begun his return to action when he was forced off after just 15 mins of a bounce game against Stenhousemuir last week.
The injury is said to be similar but not related to the one Holmes was recovering from. It is a major blow to Airdrie at a time when we are badly lacking creative players in midfield. With Steven McDougall still on the sidelines, it had been hoped that Homer would return to the side to give us a much needed boost at a time when the squad is badly stretched. However, he will now be out for a minimum of two weeks and potentially up to four.
Holmes is a player who dividies opinion in the Airdrie support with many frustrated at his style of play which is much more suited to attacking than defending. It’s true that he’s not the strongest player, but he is in my opinion one of our best players and when given freedom to attack he is a very dangerous asset for Airdrie.
Better news comes in the shape of the return to David Gillies, who came through last weeks match unscathed and made a brief substitute appearance against Cowdenbeath in Saturday.
Gillies return boosts the numbers, not only giving us an extra attacking option but giving Kenny Black the additional option of moving either Stuart Noble or Bryan Prunty into midfield.
