Cowdenbeath v Airdrie United Match Preview
Airdrie United head to Central Park to face Cowdenbeath on Saturday bouyed by last weekend’s excellent 3-0 victory over Raith Rovers, while propelled the Diamonds back into the title picture. Airdrie have been on a good run of form as of late and will be looking to pick up all three points against a Cowden side who have slipped down the table recently after a decent start to the season.
Airdrie boss Kenny Black will have to do without central defender Steven McKenna who is suspended. McKenna has been in excellent form recently and his absence will be a big blow to Airdrie. In his absence, it is likely that recent signing Steven Campbell will deputise at centre back alongside Bobby Donnelly.
Airdrie had hoped to call on Graeme Holmes but the former Dundee Utd broke down just 13 mins into the reserve clash with Stenhousemuir in midweek and is unlikely to feature. David Gillies, who scored in that match, may be set to return to the bench.
The big decision for Black is whether or not to include Stuart Noble at left midfield and bring back Bryan Prunty, who turned the game when he came on last week. Noble was excellent at midfield and although it’s not his preferred position, it did give us an attacking threat. Alternatively, Kenny may favour the system we deployed at Alloa with Noble playing just behind Prunty and Allan Russell although that may depend on the fitness of Ricky Waddell, who limped off at half-time last week.
This really is a must win game for Airdrie. The previous trip to Central Park saw a 1-1 draw with Marc Smyth sent off, but Airdrie recorded a 3-1 victory at New Broomfield just before Christmas in one of our better performances of the season. Although there are no easy games in this league, it really is a match we should be winning and given we are already potentially nine points behind leaders Ross County, nothing less than three points will do.
Prediction: Cowdenbeath 1 - 2 Airdrie
