Ayr United vs Airdrie United Match Preview
Airdrie United travel to Somerset Park on Saturday for the final game of the 2007-08 Irn Bru Second Division. It will be the last time The Diamonds visit Somerset, as Ayr are set to move into a new stadium for the start of next season.
With Airdrie already having secured second place, it is likely that boss Kenny Black will make full use of his squad given that we face a crucial trip to Kirkcaldy in the first leg of the playoff semi finals on Wednesday night.
Top scorer and Second Division Player of the Year Allan Russell will not be risked after he limped off inside the first 15 minutes of last weeks 1-1 draw with Alloa. Steven McKenna, who is set to have a knee op in the summer, has also been rested in recent weeks and is unlikely to feature.
With Airdrie potentially facing four huge games in less than 2 weeks, it makes sense to rest key players and others such as Kevin McDonald or Graeme Holmes may also be left out to protect them ahead of more crucial fixtures.
However, the game is by no means meaningless for Airdrie. Having taken just two points from three matches against Ayr this season, it is important that we turn in a good performance and get a good result to keep the momentum going ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Raith.
As always against Ayr, we will be up against a large ex-Airdrie contingent with Neil McGowan, Eddie Forrest, Mark McGeown and Jerome Vareille all in contention for a starting 11.
Match Prediction: Ayr United 1 - 2 Airdrie United
