Allan Russell scoops award
Well done to Allan Russell who has been named Irn Bru Division Two Player of the Month for December. The big striker has been in excellent form and scored five goals during the December, proving an influential figure in Airdrie’s recent turnaround in form.
I have to confess to being sceptical when we signed Russell that he was not what we needed to get out of this league, given his relatively modest goal record at his previous clubs. He also came with a bit of a reputation as a poser given his modelling days while with Hamilton Accies although, granted, this was based purely on hearsay rather than anything I had seen for myself.
I was immediately impressed by Allan’s dedication to the cause as he is certainly a player who works tirelessly for the team and impressive early showings against Raith and Partick outlined his potential. He certainly works hard for the team and is excellent at holding the ball up and bringing others into play. Given that this was a quality we badly lacked last season, when Gary Twigg was asked to play a lone striker role more suited to Allan, it is a shame we didn’t have him on board as he may have helped us avoid relegation.
Despite his hard work for the team, a striker is nothing without goals and in the first half of the 6-0 victory over Alloa in September, it did look as though he was lacking confidence in front of goal as he missed a couple of early chances.
However, since scoring his first goal later in the game he hasn’t looked back and is currently the top scorer in the division. His performances continue to improve and the club would certainly do well to extend his deal beyond the current season.
So well done Allan - and keep up the good work!
