Allan Russell named 2nd Division Player of the Year

Airdrie United striker Allan Russell has today been named Irn Bru Scottish Second Division Player of the Year, pipping Ross County striker Andrew Barrowman to the award.

The former Hamilton Accies striker has been in fantastic form since joining Airdrie in the summer and fully deserves his player of the year award, to go with the club award he won last month.

Russell has scored nineteen league goals for Airdrie this season and has been by far and away our best and most consistent performer. It seemed a bit of a gamble when Kenny Black signed him in the summer, as his goal return at previous clubs had been poor, but he has been excellent all season and has fully justified the managers decision.

As well as scoring goals, Allan has worked tirelessly for the team, leading the fight in the majority of matches.

He went off injured on Saturday inside the first fifteen minutes causing great concern, but it appears he only has a dead leg and he will be fit for the playoffs.

Allan will this week sign a pre-contract agreement with either Dundee United or Kilmarnock, a move he deserves, but his commitment to the Diamonds cause has not wavered.

Before leaving Airdrie, Allan has two more goals to achieve - first of all to finish top goalscorer in Scotland outside the SPL and most importantly, to fire Airdrie into Division one.
