Airdrie United vs Ayr United Match Preview

Airdrie United take on Ayr United at New Broomfield tonight in a match which has significance for both clubs, despite their reasonably stable positions in the league table. While Ayr are not yet safe from being caught up in the playoffs, Airdrie should not yet give up home of catching Ross County, despite the situation looking very bleak after Saturday’s tame 1-0 reversal at Stark’s Park.

Ross County’s point last night leaves them 13 points of Airdrie, having played a game more. Victory tonight would reduce that gap to 10 points, with Ross County still having to come to New Broomfield in the next few weeks. With only six games left after tonight, automatic promotion seems almost impossible, but never say never in football as stranger things have happened.

Realistically though, we are headed for the playoffs. That means four tough, never-wracking games with everything to play for which may shape the very future of our club. That means treating every game between now and the end of the season professionally and putting in as much effort as possible, because it’s not easy to stroll along for weeks at a time and then lift yourself when it really matters.

Tonight sees the return from suspension of Allan Russell after he missed Saturday’s defeat at Raith, although Marc Smyth is still missing as he reaches the second game of a three match ban.

Russell will be straight back in to spearhead the Airdrie attack, most likely alongside Stuart Noble, while Ayr include former Diamonds Neil McGowan, Eddie Forrest, Marc McGeown and Jerome Vareille.

Expected team:

Robbo; Campbell, Donnelly, McKenna, Lovering; Smith, McDonald, Andreoni, Waddell; Noble, Russell

Prediction:

Airdrie United 2 - 0 Ayr United

  1. What do’s Kenny and his staff see in Andreoni i have watched him and as far as i see he is a waist of money dont they see him the way we do then Kenny neds to come to the seats we sit in and see how bad he is.Waist of good money

  2. I do agree, I have not been impressed with Andreoni, but ultimately he is pretty much all that we have got until Holmes comes back so I think he’s going to be in the team tonight.

He has shown glimpses of potential from time to time, but overall he hasn’t been good enough thus far.
