Airdrie United 4 - 0 Cowdenbeath

Airdrie United turned in another good performance, thrashing Cowdenbeath 4-0 to all but secure second place in the Irn Bru Second Division. On the back of last weeks victory over champions Ross County, Airdrie kept a second successive clean sheet and turned in a performance that suggests they maybe do have what it takes to gain promotion after all.

The return of Graeme Holmes has certainly made a big difference in the past couple of games as we now have an extra bit of mobility in the middle of the park and when he is given the creative freedom to go forward he is as good as anyone in the division. The midfield has functioned better in the past couple of days, with Marco Andreoni improving his performances now he’s not head of creative duties.

Kevin McDonald returned to the lineup to partner Holmes in midfield with Andreoni moving out right and Darren Smith returning to right back with Steven Campbell on the bench. Lee Hollis was in goals while Bryan Prunty kept his place up front.

In fairness Cowdenbeath were awful and not a patch on what we’ll face in the playoffs but you can only beat what’s put in front of you and the performance was good - we actually looked like scoring goals again. The first goal came after some good work from Noble on the left and his low cross was well finished at the near post by Andreoni, who scored his first goal for the club.

Holmes added the second, finishing off some nice build up play by calmly rounding the keeper and slotting home to all but end the game as a contest. Prunty scored the third after the ball wasn’t properly cleared from a corner and the fourth goal by Ricky Waddell came from a lovely sweeping passing move - it genuinely was a good goal.

So while we can’t get carried away there is definitely things to be positive about after weeks of doom and gloom. If everyone with Airdrie close to their heart gets down to support the team until the end of the playoffs (and that means starting with Alloa on Saturday) I see no reason why we can’t be mixing it with Dunfermline and St Johnstone again next season.
