David Fernandez returns to Airdrie
Former Airdrieonians striker David Fernandez will make an emotional return to Airdrie with current club Kilmarnock on Saturday. The Spanish striker was a hero with Diamonds fans when he formed part of Steve Archibald’s Spanish armada in the 2000-01 season.
Fernandez was forced to leave the club when Airdrieonians became embroiled in financial trouble and Archibald was forced out by liquidator Blair Nimmo.
The striker scored seven goals in twenty appearances for Airdrie but thrilled fans with his skillful play and put in some tremendous performances, notably in 5-1 and 3-0 wins over Greenock Morton at Cappielow.
Arguably the most talented of the Spanish stars, Fernandez moved to Livingston before moving to Celtic for £1m in 2002. He suffered through injury and made only 11 appearances before moving onto Dundee Utd in 2005. Despite impressing at Utd, he left a year later to join Kilmarnock, only to suffer a serious knee injury which curtailed his season.
The Spaniard, who has on many occasions spoken fondly of his time at Airdrie and his love for the Diamonds fans, is certain to be given a heros welcome on his return to New Broomfield on Saturday.
While current strike pairing Allan Russell and Stuart Noble have impressed so far this season, there isn’t a Airdrieonian alive who wouldn’t love to see the talented Spaniard back in a Diamond jersey one day.

Although I fear he will tear us apart, I can’t wait to see Fernandez back at Broomfield.
He has been my favourite player in the last 10 years - an absolute joy to watch and as deluded as it is I won’t give up hope of seeing him in a Diamond again one day.
